Old Joe Sponge Funnel

Joe’s mind’s like a sponge…and like a funnel.

The excess goes in, dark as a tunnel.

Joe absorbs a lot: things useful; things no.

 Tough to remember is the pain in tow.

The Sponge emits gist, pouring from all parts.

The Funnel drains logic; wonders the arts.

Come Joe’s next life he’ll have the luck to own

a two-sided brain, not one overblown.

 Quick brain that can think, not just imagine,

Joe wants to talk, but more than just pidgin.

Plenty of schools, and cheap prices to boot;

Portuguese is learned–now pride of an old coot!

Joey shows up in his dear uncle’s haunts,

Must take note: a rich 50 year-old vaunts!

At least he’s not 30, in our paradise,

philandering with others’ “merchandise”.

Joe’s not chauvinistic, no, not at all,

Wants her to rest, she’s toiled since before Fall.

His lady in school in Tlaquepaque,

Eager, Joe studies math, never tacky.

Joe starts slowly; been over forty years,

Calculus is tough, yes, brings him great fears.

The thing he likes most: wife’s in agreement:

El Instituto wants poco payment”.

Best part of the deal, the teachers themselves,

Help Joe Sponge Funnel and all of the elves.

In three to four years, he will graduate;

on to a Master’s, he’ll matriculate.

He is still young–at only 62!

When he is 80 he’ll need something too.

Joe’s future book: My Interesting Life.

Star of the drama? Why, his lovely wife.

When Joe turns 90, gray matter will form.

Prolong mind jogging–don’t act at the norm!

 Tries each minute, and in multiple ways.

  Yet this too will pass, draining Sponge Funnel’s days.
